Acupuncture is a primary health care practice that has flourished in China for at least 3,000 years and is widely performed in Asia and Europe. It is considered to be one of the newest primary health care professions in this country. Acupuncture has grown in popularity due to increased public experience and use by both western and oriental physicians who have integrated acupuncture into their health care. The benefits are widespread.

Far more than a technique of inserting tiny thread like needles along meridian lines of the body, acupuncture treats a person as a whole, not just by isolated symptoms. It involves a complex system of diagnosis and related treatments, and is based on the "pattern of disharmony".

Modern acupuncture utilizes other methods as well, such as herbal medicine, moxibustion, exercise, and nutrition. Acupuncture treats to strengthen the physical condition, prevent disease, control pain, and achieve longevity. The goal, as practiced in Oriental medicine, is not only to eliminate or alleviate symptoms, but to increase the ability to function and improve the quality of life.
